In late 1942, a German heavy tank with extra thick armor and a very powerful gun, showed itself in the North African front. It was long desired by German Soldiers who were fighting non-stopping against the allies.
Forts like this, found all along the northern French coast, formed an integral part of Hitler's Atlantic Wall, a ring around what he described as fortress Europe. The immensely powerful guns in the defences were designed to defeat Allied shipping and seriously disrupt any invasion plans.

Poland was attacked by Nazi Germany in September 1939, and this invasion sparked the start of World War II. The destruction caused by this and the later Soviet counter offensives during 1944 and 1945 meant many important buildings were ruined. This bank building typifies this destruction.
